Welcome to Mrs. Hislop's Christmas Concert!

Take a seat in the FIRST THREE ROWS.

Be quiet and respectful while Mrs. H. is playing. It is distracting if you are talking or rustling around in your backpack.

Think of Christmas songs you'd like Mrs. H. to play in case she is taking requests!

THANK YOU!

The Outsiders Essay Test

Prompt:
In a focused essay with several paragraphs, explain the THEME of S.E. Hinton's novel The Outsiders. Use textual evidence to prove your points.

Hints:
You would do well to include an INTRODUCTION, BODY, and CONCLUSION. (ORGANIZATION)

Prove your ideas by using textual evidence. (IDEAS)

You can USE THE BOOK and YOUR NOTES.

DO YOUR BEST.

I know I'm mean, but I'd rather be a mean teacher with good writers than a nice teacher with poor writers.

YOU CAN DO IT!

Final Drafts

I only want you to focus on two things when you're working on your final drafts:

1. Getting rid of unnecessary ideas . . . making your writing organized.

2. Showing, not telling.

Showing, Not Telling

Showing, Not Telling writing is when we SHOW our readers an idea rather than TELL them an idea.

Telling: I was mad.

Showing: My fists curled into two tight rocks. I could feel my face turning blood-red. My teeth clenched together, trapping all the words I wished I could say aloud.

Telling: My teacher is mean.

Showing: My teacher rips our papers in half if we don't use our best handwriting. She called my mom and told her I was an idiot! She slapped a student across the face with a ruler because he sneezed. She gives us F's before she even reads our papers.
For today's journal, tell me why it's important for your writing to be organized and full of ideas.
